BANYAN TO DEMONSTRATE VINES OSI, ISDN, SNMP
TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION AT INTEROP '91
SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 7, 1991 -- Banyan Systems today announced
that it will demonstrate here at InterOp '91, Oct. 9-11, how
advanced directory and mail service, network management and wide
area connectivity standards may be integrated with the BanyanR
VINESR network operating system.
The demonstrations, in cooperation with AT&T Network Systems and
other leading network equipment vendors, will take place at three
InterOp Technology Showcases on OSI-based (booth #3100), ISDN-based
(booth #3218) and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)-based
(booth #1314) technologies.
Banyan will illustrate how VINES is designed to accommodate
emerging standards to build truly heterogeneous, enterprise-wide
networks. The demonstrations, one of which will also be given in
Banyan's booth #3108 and in AT&T Network Systems' booth #3114, will
enable customers to plan for the integration of standards
technologies with their VINES networks.
"These technology demonstrations illustrate our stated commitment
to make VINES more open, support more platforms, interoperate with
other systems and enable more mission-critical, distributed
applications," said Bill Johnson, Banyan Vice President, Product
Marketing. "They also exhibit the flexibility of the VINES
architecture to accommodate the integration of OSI, ISDN and SNMP
standards to protect our customers' investments in their networks."
Johnson noted, "Banyan takes standards support seriously, as seen
by our participation in the Advanced Computing Environment, our
alliances with AT&T, COMPAQ and SCO, our membership in the Open
Software Foundation (OSF), our support of the OSF's Distributed
Computing Environment, and our technology contribution to the OSF's
Distributed Management Environment."

When integrated with VINES, OSI technologies will ensure
interoperability in multi-vendor environments. The VINES
StreetTalkTM/X.500 demonstration will show that the StreetTalk
global naming/directory service is designed to evolve into a fully
standards-compliant Directory Services Agent (DSA). With the
technologies being demonstrated, VINES Mail users could communicate
with X.400 Message Handling Systems (MHS) hosts for enterprise-wide
messaging. Working with StreetTalk/X.500, a VINES Mail user could
select recipient names transparently from StreetTalk and X.400
directories. Together, these would give VINES users a powerful and
universally accessible electronic messaging system that works
across multiple, different computer systems.
Following the recent introduction of VINES Version 4.11 SNMP Agent,
the SNMP-based technology demonstration will show how users can
manage VINES ne tworks from existing network management systems.
At the showcase, VINES SNMP will interoperate with SNMP managers
from AT&T, Cabletron Systems, Cisco Systems, Digital Equipment
Corporation, Hewlett Packard and SynOptics Communications.
At the ISDN-based technology showcase, Banyan will demonstrate
expanded wide area connectivity options for VINES users. Banyan
already provides one of the most robust set of wide area networking
options and previously demonstrated connectivity through ISDN
switched networks at InterOp '90. With VINES Version 4.11, Banyan
also became the only networking environment to offer X.29 inbound
connectivity, which operates over ISDN switched networks via ISDN
terminal adapters and X.25 data networks.
At Interop '91, VINES client and VINES server ISDN connectivity, at
T1 speeds, will be demonstrated over Basic Rate Interface and
Primary Rate Interface lines to AT&T 5ESS and Northern Telecom
DMS-100 ISDN switches. In addition, Banyan and AT&T Network
Systems will show in their booths how flexible and cost-effective
enterprise-wide networks can be created using ISDN and VINES.
